Early 1990s. A young elementary school teacher named Kate accepts a tempting offer and takes a job as a governess to an 8-year-old orphan girl whose previous mentor, she is told, has simply run away. On the spot, Kate is struck by the posh mansion where little Flora lives, and it also turns out that the girl has a teenage brother, Miles, who was recently expelled from a private school for fighting. The surprises don't end there: the strict maid, the elderly Mrs. Grose, forbids Flora to leave the estate, and Kate herself hears strange noises on the first night.
