The near future. Several years ago, mankind launched a program to search for extraterrestrial life, Project Lima, led by Captain Clifford McBride. The last signal of the expedition was detected in the vicinity of Neptune, and since then nothing was known about its fate. Captain McBride himself became a hero and the most famous astronaut who inspired many to explore space.

Sixteen years after the disappearance of Project Lima, strange bursts of energy begin to occur on Earth, disabling electrical systems and wreaking havoc and destruction. According to the U.S. space agency, the signal comes from Neptune, and now the son of a famous astronaut, Major Roy McBride, is assigned an important mission. He must get to a Martian base and from there try to contact his presumably living father.

The Ares 3 Martian mission was forced to leave the planet in the process of work due to an impending sandstorm. Engineer and biologist Mark Watney suffered damage to his spacesuit during the sandstorm. The mission staff, believing him dead, evacuated the planet, leaving Mark alone.
